About our surgical procedures

Dr Brown performs a broad range of urological surgeries for benign and malignant conditions of the kidney, bladder, prostate, ureter and male reproductive organs. Some surgical procedures are performed in our consulting rooms under local anaesthetic, while others are performed in a private hospital theatre under general anaesthetic.

Our consulting rooms are based within Peninsula Private Hospital (Kippa-Ring), Sunnybank Private Hospital (Sunnybank) and Mater Private Hospital (Rockhampton).

Procedures are grouped below by where they are performed and the anaesthetic involved.

Surgery

Procedures performed under local anaesthetic

The procedures listed below are performed in our consulting rooms as day procedures. For most patients, it is possible to return home within a couple of hours.

Adult circumcision

These days, adult circumcision can be carried out as a relatively straightforward day case performed under local anaesthetic with sedation. Many adult males choose this procedure to assist with phimosis, recurrent infection or lichen sclerosus, or just for personal preference. During your consultation, you can expect to discuss the technique, recovery and what to expect before and after surgery.

Procedures performed under general anaesthetic

The procedures detailed below are performed in the operating theatres of our partner private hospitals: Peninsula Private (Kippa-Ring), Sunnybank Private (Sunnybank) or Mater Private Hospital (Rockhampton). For these surgeries, patients will be admitted as either a day case or short-stay inpatient depending on the procedure.

Minimally invasive BPH (enlarged prostate) treatment

Urology NOW offers one of the most complete ranges of BPH treatment in Queensland, including:

  • HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) — the gold standard for larger prostates, with durable, long-term results
  • iTind — a minimally invasive temporary implant. Dr Brown was the first surgeon in Australia accredited to perform this procedure
  • Rezum — water vapour therapy, suitable for selected patients wanting to preserve sexual function
  • TURP — the traditional surgical benchmark, still appropriate in many situations

Which treatment is right for you depends on prostate size, symptoms, your goals around recovery and sexual function, and other medical factors. We will walk you through the options at your consultation.

Urological cancer surgery

Urological cancer is Dr Brown’s subspecialist surgical interest. With his expertise, we treat:

  • Prostate cancer — including open and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy
  • Bladder cancer — endoscopic resection (TURBT) and major bladder surgery where indicated
  • Kidney cancer — partial nephrectomy (kidney preserving) and full nephrectomy, performed laparoscopically where possible
  • Testicular cancer surgery

Wherever clinically appropriate, organ-preserving and minimally invasive techniques are chosen first to support faster recovery and lower complication rates.

Laser surgery for kidney and ureteric stones

Treating kidney and ureteric stones is now a modern, flexible ureteroscopy surgery completed using a fine laser fibre passed via the urethra. There are no incisions, and most patients go home the same day or the following morning.

Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery

Keyhole surgery involves a long, thin instrument being inserted through small ports in the abdomen, allowing major upper urinary tract surgery to be performed with less pain, a shorter hospital stay and faster return to normal activity than traditional open surgery.

Open surgery

For some patients, open surgery remains the safest and most effective option, particularly in complex anatomy, large tumours or revision surgery. Dr Brown’s experience across both open and minimally invasive techniques means the right approach is chosen for your situation.

Endoscopic surgery

This involves diagnostic and therapeutic surgery performed through the body’s natural openings, with no external incisions. Specific procedures completed with endoscopic surgery include rigid cystoscopy for bladder tumour management (TURBT), surgical management of urethral strictures, and other procedures of the lower urinary tract.

Not sure which procedure is right for you?

A consultation with Dr Brown is the best way to weigh up your options. Most patients can be seen at a North Brisbane, South Brisbane or Rockhampton clinic within two to three weeks of referral.

What to expect in your surgical journey

Before surgery

Once a surgical plan has been agreed, our rooms will coordinate your hospital admission, anaesthetist, and any pre-operative tests with you. You will be given written instructions that detail any required fasting, medications to stop or continue, and what to bring on the day. Estimated out-of-pocket costs are provided upfront before your procedure is booked.

On the day of surgery

When the day of your surgery arrives, you will be admitted at your scheduled time. Dr Brown will see you in the admissions area to confirm the procedure, answer last questions and mark consent. Procedures performed under general anaesthetic are conducted in a fully accredited hospital theatre alongside specialist anaesthetists.

Recovery and follow-up

Your recovery time depends on various factors and the type of procedure. Day-case patients are usually home the same day, while major surgery may require a short time spent in hospital. Detailed written discharge instructions, follow-up appointment dates and a direct line to our rooms are provided to every patient.

Clinic Locations

Where your surgery takes place

Dr Brown consults from rooms within three private hospitals and operates from their associated theatre suites. This means your specialist consultations, surgery and follow-up can all happen at the same site, with continuity from start to finish.

Peninsula Private Hospital – convenient for Redcliffe, Caboolture, Moreton Bay and northern suburbs of Brisbane.

South Brisbane

Sunnybank Private Hospital, Sunnybank – convenient for Logan, the southern suburbs of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Mater Private Hospital, Rockhampton – unlike fly-in-fly-out specialists, Dr Brown is locally available for follow-up and recovery support, spending week blocks operating and consulting.

Why patients choose Urology NOW for surgery

  • One surgeon, start to finish — you will be assessed, operated on and reviewed by Dr Brown. There is no rotating roster of registrars or other surgeons.

  • 25+ years of surgical experience across both Australian and UK practice, with subspecialist focus on urological cancer surgery.

  • Public hospital leadership — Dr Brown is the Director of Urology Services at Redcliffe Hospital and Vice Chair of the Rural Surgery Section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

  • First-mover in advanced BPH treatment — Dr Brown was the first surgeon in Australia accredited to perform the iTind procedure for enlarged prostate.

  • Local aftercare — unusually for a surgeon servicing regional Queensland, Dr Brown maintains a full-week local presence in Rockhampton, rather than doing same day fly-in-fly-out.

  • Fast access — most patients are seen within two to three weeks of referral, with surgery scheduling to suit your work and family commitments.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to be seen?2026-06-12T15:31:06+10:00

Yes, to be seen you will need a referral from your GP or another medical practitioner. Vasectomy is the exception: you can refer yourself for this procedure, although a GP referral allows the Medicare rebate to apply.

How long is the waiting list for surgery?2026-06-12T15:30:38+10:00

Most patients are offered a consultation within two to three weeks of referral, and surgery can take place within a few weeks of that, depending on the procedure and your private health insurance arrangements.

Do you operate on uninsured patients?2026-06-12T15:30:12+10:00

Yes. Urology NOW provides a clear, written quote for self-funding patients before any procedure is booked. Cost is one of several factors we will discuss as part of your treatment planning.

Where will my surgery be performed?2026-06-12T15:29:57+10:00

Day procedures carried out under local anaesthetic are performed in our consulting rooms. Procedures done under general anaesthetic, including cystoscopy and prostate biopsy, are performed in theatre at Peninsula Private (Kippa-Ring), Sunnybank Private (Sunnybank) or Mater Private Hospital (Rockhampton).

Will I see Dr Brown personally, or a different surgeon?2026-06-12T15:29:40+10:00

You will see Dr Brown for every consultation, the procedure itself, and your follow-up appointments. Urology NOW is a single-surgeon practice.

What if I live regionally?2026-06-12T15:29:21+10:00

Rockhampton patients are seen and operated on locally at Mater Private Hospital, with full-week availability for follow-up. Patients from Gladstone, Yeppoon, Emerald and the wider Central Queensland catchment are welcome.
